My soundcard is what came with my Gateway - SoundMax Audio(?)  Probably isn't much help.
Not to worry.  I'm just throwing out the first things that come to mind.

The Intro and end music AREN'T MP3's. While it was strictly around in that era (since 1989), it wasn't at all widespread until the mid-late 90's.

What IS on the CD is just CD Audio. So, if the analog CD audio lead on your CD-ROM isn't connected to your soundcard (by a tiny 4-pin cable, not the huge IDE lead), you may not get any audio, depending on the path it decides to take.

The intro and end music are available as MP3s on the root of my BARIS CD (it's an original, not a burned copy).  I expect the game doesn't make use of them but that they were put there as "extras" of some sort.

This past weekend, I set up BARIS on my sister-in-law's (rather old) Windows 2000 laptop, and the intro music worked.  Curiouser and curiouser...

Peyre,
I'm not extremely tech savy, but based on your CD working on the older system, it could be that a small adjustment to the way your autoexec file loads may be the answer (?).  As I indicated before, my CD works using Windows XP (using DOSBox only).

*Forrages for BARIS CD* - Nope, I see none on my original (re-release) white label disc. However, if I stick it in a CD player, i can hear the music, showing that there is CD-audio on the disc.

Yes, this will be because the sound during the game is encoded, and so is passed through IDE to the soundcard, where it is converted to the waveform we hear. The difference is that the music is stored on the CD as a waveform itself, and is decoded not at the sound card, but at the CD-ROM, and will pass through the small 4-pin wire to the soundcard, which merely passes it through to the speakers. So, if this 4-pin wire is not connected, you may not hear the CD audio.

You can always download the MP3s from my BARIS page if you like.  The ones there are renamed and have ID3 tags added, which is always nice.

Oh, that's a thought!  I'll have to crack my machine open sometime and take a look.  (Too bad it's kind of hard to get it out to work on...)

Ok, I opened it up the other day, and the wire is connected to both the sound card and the DVD-ROM drive.  So maybe the issue is something else.  Luckily I still get in-game music, so it's really not a big issue, just would be nice to get the intro & end music.

Maybe its driver related. The old cards used (i think) different drivers for music and audio. Maybe its a case of incorrect driver selection, or one being supported but not the other?

Could be...though there shouldn't be a problem since I'm running in an emulator.  Hard to say...

Strange...the thing where the intro and ending music wouldn't play must have been something to do with my DVD-ROM drive.  Something went wrong on a firmware update and the drive dropped dead, so I ordered and installed a replacement, and...I get the intro and end music now(!)  Must have been some quirk of that particular drive.

I have a few questions:

1. Does the following procedure described above work with a downloaded cd version.

2. What is an ISO and how do I use it?

3. How do I use the downloaded version

4. Can I buy the cd rom version of BARIS in stores? Amazon didnt have it. (bad sign)

5. If the downloaded version doesnt install because it has to find the install on the hard drive what do I do?
