Space Station game
« on: August 16, 2005, 02:06:14 PM »
Has anyone else tried this space station game? I found it yesterday and it's actually kind of fun.

It's sort of like Lego... except when you put all the modules together you have to keep an eye on the amount of energy being supplied (through solar panels or other sources) and the amount of heat building up in the station.

There is a game mode where you have to meet certain goals, and a "free build" mode where you don't have to worry about money. There is a selection of pre-built stations... some of them (like a station built out of a bunch of Space Shuttle external tanks) are pretty amazing.

Here is a picture of the station I just made (I based it on the ISS)...

Interesting game.  The graphics look better than the last space station game I played, Skybase.  Do you have to use Russian components or can you make a straight U.S. station (e.g. space station Freedom)?  When I played SkyBase, I had to use Zarya no matter what.

It always gives you the Zarya module to begin with, but you can scrap it if you want. The rest of the modules all appear to be American from what I can tell. There are add-ons that give you extra modules like the Shutte ET, Skylab modules, etc. but they are all pretty much what has been used in the past (including the ISS).

Well, there are a few fictional energy supply modules (ie. RTG's and fussion reactors).

The Sims meet ISS - ok, not officially the Sims, but this game looks pretty interesting.  I haven't downloaded the demo yet, but from the forums on the website, it looks like there are a ton of details you have to get just right.  Could be fun!  If anyone buys an extra copy for the holidays, I can provide you my postal address...   :P

Funny: I recall playing this game when it was called, "Space Station Manager". Essentially the same game, but with another name. And perhaps it wasn't so expensive back then.

I'm happy to see it becoming more popular. Goodness knows how many combinations of modules I made with the demo's 30-module limit!
