Actually, due to mars lower gravity, mars atmosphere reaches farther than earth’s atmosphere.

Wasn't there a recent pic of a Martian bolide's contrail ?? IIRC, NASA tried to work out if it was one of their old 'orbiters' going down, but conclusion was 'insufficient data'.

As the atmosphere is so thin, even small stuff can get a lot lower before it 'burns up'...

Note number of 'modest' craters littering landscape.

Though Mars is a smaller target than Earth as smaller and less massive, more gets through...

I am sure there are a lot of meteorites on thin atmosphere planets, but the odds are against that being the object in the UFO picture.  For one thing it would be a streak, not a sphere.  Meteorites are moving very fast, and usually burning up at the same time.

This is a cropped picture of Spirit navigation Sol 551.  I call it "the face" because of the strange face like appearance.  It also has several other oddities:  something that looks like a wine glass, but under magnification appears more like a twisted tube or worm.  It has a round stone or cap.  And, under magnification there are a series of round balls that appear connected -- an insect perhaps?

The picture below is a crop of a Spirit Sol 549 navigation picture.  The crop is of "things" that are not UFO's, but are interesting nonetheless.  The picture was taken near the top of one of the Columbia Hills.

Here is the URL for those that wish to check it out on the WWW.  http://marsrovers.jpl.nasa.gov/gallery/all/spirit.html

I just finished updating this thread.  I have substituted cropped pictures so they will load quicker, and show you exactly what I found so surprising.

The pictures were downloaded from the JPL site.  URL:   http://marsrovers.jpl.nasa.gov/gallery/all/spirit.html

These pictures are all taken by the Spirit Mars Rover in the Columbia Hills.  I then bit mapped them and increased their resolution by a factor of either 2 or 3.  This means they were blown up to a larger size.  Then they were cropped for their "interesting" detail.  And, finally, they were JPEGed so they could be uploaded to this web site.

The cropping makes them smaller -- easier for your computer to load -- and yet gives considerably more detail of the important details.

In my judgement there is evidence here of either life, or civilization (past or present).  There are "things" that look like worms or insects.  And, there are other "things" that appear to have been manufactured

Admittedly, none of the things depicted are UFO's, however,in virtually every picture in the Spirit Sol 548-556 sequence there are dots in the sky.  They change position from picture to picture.  Sometimes there is just one dot then in other there are clusters of them.  At the beginning of this thread you will find a "sky" picture showing one of them.

Is this a watering hole, or simply very fine sand?  Your guess is as good as mine.  If it was on Earth it would be a watering hole, for sure.  This is a Spirit navigation picture taken near the top of one of the Columbia Hills.

Take a good look at the pictures.  These pictures are from the JPL web site and are listed as "raw" navigation pictures taken by the Spirit rover.

There really appear to be 'manufactured' items in these pictures.  The cardboard protruding from the giant footprint.  The flat square looking much like a roofing tack.  The rock that really looks like a slightly distorted cement block.

But, even stranger are the 'black' shadows.  Are they holes?  Or, are they objects.  And, if objects, what are they.  Under magnification they appear to be worms and cats.  Yes, many of these black objects around the 'watering hole' have cat like configurations.

Take a good look at these pictures.  Go to JPL ( http://marsrovers.jpl.nasa.gov/gallery/all/spirit.html) and see for yourself.  Download them and feed them into photo software, enlarge them, and take a good look!

Is your name Richard Hoagland by any chance?

Enlarging digital images alters their details and makes them useless for analysis.

Does enlargement turn images into cats?  Does it turn them into worms?  Into insects?  Probably not.  Any alteration that enlargement makes would be random, or possibly blur.

Now, take a look at what might be The First Martian.  I call him "Splat" because the Spirit Rover ran over him as he was crossing the rover's path.  The 'enlargement' here is massive, so take your best guess.

The second picture is a crop near the "watering hole" and what it shows is . . . well, draw your own conclusions.  Perhaps it shows a number of deep black holes on the Martian surface.  Once again, your guess is as good as mine.  This picture was lightened and sharpened as well as enlarged, cropped, and JPEGed.

No, enlargement doesn't turn images into cats... an overactive imagination does.

Actually, no, image enlargements don't result in random alterations... they are very predictable, well understood alterations. You might even say the changes are almost computer like in their predictability.

Those martians must move pretty darn slow if they can't avoid a robotic rover that has a top speed of 5cm per second.

Keep in mind that I have made no 'absolute' statements in regards to these pictures.  I am keeping an open mind.  But there sure seem to be a lot of jet black 'holes?' around the "watering hole".  And, those 'holes' sure look a lot like cat-like creatures under magnification.

And, yes, Splat looks a little slow.  Poor fellow.  But if the rover had just run over me I would probably look a little like that too!

P.S. The photo of "splat" was a Spirit Panoramic, not a navigation, picture.

The pictures of these 'black shapes' or "cats?" do not show any object casting a black shadow.  If they did then the most likely explanation would be simply shadow.  The only other explanation would be holes in the ground.  But, take a good look, and do they look like holesFunny shape for holes, don't you think?

So, if they aren't shadows and they aren't holes, then what are they?  To me, they look like . . . cats.  What do you think they are?

I think they are shadows and indentations in a high-contrast visual environment.  But, I'm not a cat expert.
