James Doohan (Scotty) has died
« on: July 20, 2005, 10:55:36 AM »
From Yahoo! News

LOS ANGELES -
James Doohan, the burly chief engineer of the Starship Enterprise in the original "Star Trek" TV series and movies who responded to the command "Beam me up, Scotty," died Wednesday. He was 85.

Doohan died at 5:30 a.m. at his Redmond, Wash., home with his wife of 28 years, Wende, at his side, Los Angeles agent and longtime friend Steve Stevens said. The cause of death was pneumonia and Alzheimer's disease, he said.

Doohan had said farewell to public life in August 2004, a few months after being diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease.

The Canadian-born Doohan was enjoying a busy career as a character actor when he auditioned for a role as an engineer in a new space adventure on NBC in 1966. A master of dialects from his early years in radio, he tried seven different accents.

"The producers asked me which one I preferred," Doohan recalled 30 years later. "I believed the Scot voice was the most commanding. So I told them, `If this character is going to be an engineer, you'd better make him a Scotsman.'"

The series, which starred William Shatner as Capt. James T. Kirk and Leonard Nimoy as the enigmatic Mr. Spock, attracted an enthusiastic following of science fiction fans, especially among teenagers and children, but not enough ratings power. NBC canceled it after three seasons.

When the series ended in 1969, Doohan found himself typecast as Montgomery Scott, the canny engineer with a burr in his voice. In 1973, he complained to his dentist, who advised him: "Jimmy, you're going to be Scotty long after you're dead. If I were you, I'd go with the flow."

"I took his advice," said Doohan, "and since then everything's been just lovely."

Sad news indeed.

He was one of my favourite characters on the series and I once attended one of his speeches at Algonquin College here in Ottawa. He spoke for about 45 minutes on behind the scenes info and then answered questions for another hour. A very funny man. He closed the evning by presenting a Star Trek blooper reel that lasted for 20 minutes and was frickin hilarious.

I think he would have liked to have known that his passing occured on the anniversary of the first moon landing.

Godspeed James.

He served in the Royal Canadian Artillery during the D-Day invasion, making him a real life hero, not just a movie hero.

Just got the news here, and I echo sentiments above.
Also sad, because back in 1999 when still working at The Cape, I was struck with an idea for a Trek plot that would bring Scotty, Geordi, and a time-transported engineer from the Apollo era together... but of course never got off my duff to write it.

Well, that's a darn shame.  ('Course, possibly for the best to die in the earlier stages of Alzheimer's, but just the same, it's sad news to hear.)  He was a Right Honorable Drunkard in his day, from what I've heard, and I've always thought he was extra cool for it.  I guess he was also a WWII veteran--and that's righteous as well.  (My great-uncle passed away a year or two ago; he was also a war hero, having been active in the Maquis, and while his death was merciful by that point, it was still sad to hear of his passing.  Same kind of thing I guess.)

Like most of the folks on this forum (er, I hope I'm not showing my age too much here), I grew up with the original Trek, and it has been sad to see that generation dying off.  I'll be very sorry to see Nimoy go too, when the time comes.  (And of course, Yeoman Rand--rrow!)   8)

At a convention ~10+ years ago I got to ask him about his WWII service.  I will never forget the far-away look on his face as he described D-Day.  I didn't begin to understand it until I saw Saving Private Ryan several years later.  After he recovered from his wounds, he was in training for the invasion of Japan.  He described how scared he was, and how relieved he was when the Bomb dropped, and the Japanese threw in the sponge.  One of the great moments of my life was being able to thank him for all had done.

Yes, he could drink with the best of them.  He came to University of Idaho years ago to speak to future engineers, later he went out to the bars, he was out drinking students and that is a lot to say since the students consider themselves to be professional drinkers.
Oh, I do have his autograph. 8)
