New Section Requests
« on: May 19, 2005, 01:27:49 PM »
Hello.

I am wondering if this forum would be willing to start a new section for the International Space University? (Do NOT create it yet; at the moment, I am just asking the question).

I, along with about 15 other people, are volunteers on the Local Organising Committee of the Summer Session, which is being held in Vancouver, B.C. this year:

http://www.isu2005.ubc.ca/

I am doing some volunteer webmastering for the group along with another person. We had hoped to create a forum, but we are finding ourselves pressed for time, so we are now considering joining an existing forum. The summer session usually involves about 150 students, plus faculty, plus ISU representatives, etc. We would promote your forum among attendees.

Although the 2005 summer session is what initiated my request, I believe it would be used long-term by
(i) alumni of each session to stay in touch with each other,
(ii) students of each year’s summer session,
(iii) members of the ISU’s main campus, which is ongoing.

Regards,

Robert

I will consider this request, Robert. Would you want that section of the forum to only be available to the staff and students, or open to the general public?

I don't think we would mind if it were open to the public; the more interaction, the better.

The only reason I asked is because making it only available to the students etc. would complicate the forum registration process. We would have to sort out who is a student and who isn't.

I do kind of worry about what adding 150+ new members would do to my bandwidth etc. but it probably wouldn't have that big an effect.

I could help you out there, you have a host?

Presently, the University of British Columbia, which is hosting the event, is also letting us use some of their webspace. We had looked at the phpBB system, which seems to be the most highly recommended free forum software. However, we haven't pursued that any further because of lack of time. I suppose if it only took an hour to set up, we would consider it, but I don't think any of us volunteers has any PHP, mySQL, etc. expertise.

If you could direct us to a simple tutorial, where we could get step-by-step directions, that would be appreciated. It would certainly open up another option for us.

If you have access to cPanel with your host, installing phpBB (or SMF =) can be as simple as entering in the Super Administrator's login details and path to install to, and then clicking install. From that point on, almost all admin work can be done from the board's own admin panel. Adding users, changing permissions etc. is also pretty self explanatory from here.

Heck, if I can do it, anyone can ;)

SMF was really easy to install. If you have access to a mysql database then it shouldn't take you long to set one up.

Yeah, I'd definitely recommend SMF, despite my initial doubts

A red sign on the door of a physics professor: 'If this sign is blue, you're going too fast.'

I have seen this on a sticker on a truck in the parking lot of a physics department. It was red when I saw it. :)
