Canadian Political Shocker!!!!
« on: May 17, 2005, 02:10:05 PM »
Belinda Stronach has defected to the Liberals from the Conservatives thereby assuring PM Paul Martin will survive a confidence vote this week.

She stated that she believed Condervative leader Steven Harper was not sensitive to the needs of the Canadian public

I think this will be a good thing. It will hopefully force the government (all parties) to get back to work and leave the talk of election behind for now. The public has said they don't want an election yet, and if the tories can't win a non-confidence vote there won't be one until after the Gomery inquiry is complete.

People are saying she switched parties because of "political opportunism". I can't see that... how could she more opportunities in a party that is most likely going to lose the next election? Sure, she got a cabinet post out of it... but how long will that last? If she had stayed with the Conservatives she probably would have gotten a cabinet post next year anyway.

Personally, I think she has always been a liberal at heart. Maybe she was a spy... got close to some Conservatives, learned their plans, and is now reporting back to her true party.

Sounds like Senator McCain, Republican from Arizona, he is a RINO, Republican In Name Only.  He claims he is Republican but is known to vote for Democrat causes.  There are also a few southern Democrats that vote republican too.

I've never understood why some politicians belong to the party they do, when they seem more suitable for the other party. Zell Miller (sp?) is a good example.

In Stronach's case she only barely won the last election running as a Conservative, so switching to the Liberals should only upset about half of her constituents. In fairness though, the proposed Liberal budget would be good for her riding so by making sure it passes she is helping them.

First off, sorry for posting this in the wrong forum to start with :?

I do not believe Stronach was ever a "Conservative" in the first place but I do admire her sense of timing and her absolutely correct shot at Harper. I do not trust that guy. Anybody who would put his own political ambitions above the good of the country and side with that separatist POS Duceppe deserves being trashed.

And as for it being a career move on her part, I doubt that. She probably has more money than all of the other MP's combined and could care less.

Kel, I think you were bang on about how the budget is good for her riding and she thinks it should be supported.

I don't think she will have any trouble winning re-election in her riding as a Liberal come next election, whenever that may be.

It's no big deal, I'm just being a neat freak.

My thoughts exactly. And let's not forget one of the reasons why the PC party was almost wiped out after the 1993 election... there were allegations that they were taking bribes from Airbus, and the only reason we don't hear more about that is because Brian Mulroney sues anyone who talks about it.

Apparently a Liberal MP was rushed away in an ambulance today... I wonder if Harper will pull out one of his MP's if there is a confidence vote (like the NDP were willing to do when that tory MP needed cancer treatment). Something tells me Harper will take advantage of the Liberal MP's illness if he is away for a while.

Canadian politics is sort of like "Survivor" right now.

We've got people switching alliances and changing the expected outcome of "the game". The people who last week were confident that the vote would go their way are now the ones expecting to lose, and the people who were not a part of any alliances (the independents) are now the ones getting all the attention.

It is making it pretty interesting to watch, that's for sure.

Agreed.

The vote is scheduled for 5:45 this evening and it looks like it could be a tie.

That means the "Speaker of the House" casts the deciding vote and he, of course, is a Liberal.

And it is a tie, so Paul Martin can survive. I was in Montreal when this vote takes place. Then the next day I saw many riot police in the street because some students planted a tree in the street pavement. I am not sure, what are they protesting.

Whenever I go to Canada, some interesting thing occurs...
