String theory.
« on: November 18, 2004, 10:35:49 AM »
I was away from school yesterday, and managed to see a programme about the string theory. What do you think about this.

Personally I think it's an interesting concept but, until they can prove it with an experiment, it's just theory.

Also, I'm not 100% sure how it works, could someone go through it in simpleton terms?! :D

There is some discussion going on about string theory here http://physicsforums.com/forumdisplay.php?f=66
I'm not the expert on strings but they are small"if an atom were the size of the solar system, then a string would be the size of an atom" dr Kaku. Strings were thought up to make a grand unifing theory- a way to join Einsteins GRT with his quantum therory. Strings help us (or me anyway) to visualise the effect of gravity. You might want to do a searh for Ed Witten, he's the man that just might get the math to work.

It is a very interesting concept indeed.. but It is not proven. If it is true, the future possibilities will be infinate. Also keep in mind it may not be proven correct or not in our lifetime.  :(

String theory....

Like the early Schroedinger stuff about fitting 'standing waves' into electron orbitals, String Theory will probably be 'workable' for long enough to drive a generation of students to strong drink and/or headache pills...

Agreed. In my old days I thought it was a cool hypothesis with a positive future. Now I have my doubts, because by analogy string theory applied to modern astrophysics is equivalent to the Cosmological constant as applied to General Relativity. To me, it has a future, but it doesn't have all the answers. Regardless of the fact that it may thankfully answer more questions than ask new ones, it still leaves a gaping hole in the questions it is UNABLE to answer.

Didn't I read that cosmic string theory (long strings of matter floating through the universe) is again being viewed as a likely explanation for dark matter? Or at least for the mass needed to keep the universe working as we understand it?
