Thanks LEO.  Until we're able to host it somewhere again, anyone who still wants to download the CD version should email me.  I can make it available for FTP download directly from my computer--but I have to set it up to serve, and I have to get you the URL.  Or, we could try doing the transfer via YouSendIt.  The file is 312MB.

Hi guys, I found this site through Google and this seems like a good idea. I would really like to get my hands on a CD-rip of this game (I own the CD but it's scratched beyond repair). What about setting up a torrent? I have absolutely no idea how to do it myselt but I think it might be the best option in this situation.

Do we have any willing seeds (hosts)? If so, I'll look into it :)

The way the system works, you start with one seed who acts much as an FTP server initially, but over time, as more people seed and download, the load gets passed around much more efficiently. The theory behind the system can be found at the official BitTorrent site

I would volunteer to be a seed, but I don't know how long I'd be able to keep seeding for. I also have quite a low upload speed. But I might give it a try.

However, I'm sure you could get a lot of people on the torrent (therefore more seeds + peers). The Underdogs site for example recommends that you seek out the CD version (they only have a cut-down version available for download), and they've started using torrents to distribute larger files. I'm sure if you sent them a link to the torrent they would append their BARIS article with it.

I'd be willing to seed it, but I have a pretty slow upload DSL, so it wouldn't be great if I'm the only one.

Have people been successful in playing the version from The Underdogs?  I've downloaded and unzipped the RAR files, but the WinRAR program has insisted that the files are corrupted.  Does anyone have any idea how I might get around this?

Thanks!

Edit: Sorry, but I have limited bandwidth, and unfortunately cannot act as a seed for hosting the BARIS CD files.

I havn't had any trouble with the HOTU version, but I havn't had to install it in a long time too, so I can't remember the process off hand.  Also, I just got Bittorent set up to work with my lan, and I have unlimited bandwidth (but pretty slow DSL) and could seed at a minimum a few hours every night (should be able to get nearly constant if we need it, but overnight is easiest).

I've been able to get it to run just fine in DOSBox.

You know though, the CD-ROM version is really much better than the floppy version.  If you'd like a copy of the CD version, shoot me a note and we can arrange a direct download.

I just won a copy of the BARIS CD on ebay for $6.  Not bad.  I am sure I will make an archive backup and store it here on the forum. :D

Store it on the forum?  Is there space for that?  If so, I have a working ISO (not the original belly-flop one) that I could upload.

As much as I would like to help out, I'm not allowed to distribute copyrighted software from my webspace unless I'm the owner of the copyright. I know the owners of BARIS have more or less given their permission to share it, but I would rather not risk having my site shut down. My webhost is pretty strict about things like this because obviously their butt is on the line too if the copyright owner decided to sue.

If WinRAR says its corrupted, you havent got a chance of opening it. If for whatever reason you were disconnected from HOTU's server, some programs will (mistakenly) think that the download has finished, when in reality you're left with part of a file.

In a nutshell, a redownload should solve it :)

I could host it at my work, but the download would be capped around 20 K/sec.

Right there with you.  Totally understandable.  We'll find another way--and in the meantime, people can get it directly from me or others until then.
