Another thing is most consumer products are designed with a short lifetime (2 years).  If you want something to last a long time you have to get it industrial or mil-spec.
I don't think they have mil-spec DVD players!

imo, communism vs democracy in the main arguement of china vs US is a horseload of BS...

- firstly, neither are really fighting for communism or democracy anymore. 1 is a federated republic, 1 is a single party republic; both are capitalistic.

- 2ndly, both are fighting against terrorist and things that can destablize the pacific economy (finding solution to north korea)

- 3rdly, china has been a US ally for more than 50 years: during WWII and then after the USSR/China spilt, both countries share the common goal of limiting USSR influence in asia until USSR was no more. so they are no real stranger to being allies.

- 4thly, the quoted report points to china wanting to have "parity" with major power, which mean to reach a level of "equal standing". i would question why that can be view as evil or bad when USA is becoming a well-known abuser of influence.

imo, US politican are just look for other countries to blame for their own problems. china trade surplus for example is only a fraction of the total negative flow, even if there isn't a china, there are still 100s of countries that are cheaper than USA.

which is a bigger threat? perhap it own government which continues to sell the country into debt just to stay in office...
