Apollo crawler
« on: May 15, 2017, 04:23:29 PM »
Hi,I have been asking this in other venues but no luck. When the crawler arrives at the launch tower ,is the Saturn launched from the crawler platform and if not how was the saturn lifted from the crawler onto to the launch platform. It seems like an impossible job to lift it without damage to engines etc.I have seen the crawlers close up and cannot see the damage i thought should be there,Thanks everybody.Bill

Hi Bill,
There are two parts: the crawler and the mobile launcher platform.  The crawler brings the mobile launcher platform out with the rocket.  When it arrives at LC-39A or B, the crawler lowers the mobile launcher platform on to some pylons.  The crawler withdraws a mile away and after the launch, comes back to lift the mobile launcher platform to take it back to the VAB.
Check on youtube, there should be a lot of Saturn V and Shuttle crawler videos that show the process.
