Dragon V2
« on: June 03, 2014, 10:34:23 AM »
So what do you guys think of that design?  I had a WTF moment when I saw it land using its thrusters and no parachute.
The inside looked spacious but I think the mockup might not of had all the tanks and equipment installed.

I was surprised by the photovoltaics curved around the Dragon's Service Module.  I thought SpaceX would have continued to use the solar array that is on the cargo version of Dragon.  I wish them success.

I am very excited by the new Dragon design. I really hope it works as planned.

I was a little worried about what would happen if there was a problem with the landing thrusters, but it sounds like they've built in some redundancy. The engines work in pairs and only one engine from each pair needs to work. Plus there is a parachute if necessary.

The flight control console looks cool, although I imagine a touchscreen would be difficult to use during launch and return to Earth. Maybe it will have voice controls like Siri... or better yet... Jarvis from Iron Man. ;)

I found some information about the descent thrusters, called the Super Draco, they are larger version of the existing Draco engine.  I hope to hell that Spacex does not get into some environmental lawsuit with firing those thrusters over land since they are using monomethyl hydrazine and nitrogen tetroxide as the fuel/oxidizer.

As far as I could see, there was nothing but seats and displays in the mockup.  No avionics, ECLSS, or overhead luggage bins.  It'll be interesting to see how 'spacious' this turns out to be once it's fully outfitted.  Not meant to be a ding on it at all - just can't wait to see the fully outfitted interior.

Well it is meant to have about three times the cabin space of the Apollo command module, so it would look spacious compared to Apollo or Soyuz--its cabin should end up at least as big as the entire Shuttle mid-deck.
