There are some artist concept drawings for the various museums vying for a shuttle posted at collectSPACE.

I personally like the one for the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex most.

What the hell?  The announcement is in one hour and the NYC Intrepid Museum is already saying that Enterprise is theirs.

WSJ is leaking the story that KSC gets Atlantis and Houston gets Endeavour.  That is B.S. that all the shuttles are on the east coast.

I guess it makes sense that KSC and JSC get a Shuttle since they were so directly involved in their flights, and I do think one of them should go to the NASM. That only leaves Enterprise as the wildcard. I do agree with you, SM, the west coast is being neglected in this situation.

Wow, looks like Endeavor is going to Los Angeles.

I did not know L.A. was in the running.  At least one will go to west coast.  I still disagree with NYC.  I think they picked NYC and LA since they are the largest cities in the U.S.

That's what I've been hearing... NY and LA were chosen to give the largest number of people the opportunity to view the Shuttles. It makes sense, I guess.

This is from the NASA.gov website, here are the consolation prizes:
NASA also announced that hundreds of shuttle artifacts have been allocated to museums and education institutions.

    * Various shuttle simulators for the Adler Planetarium in Chicago, the Evergreen Aviation & Space Museum of McMinnville, Ore., and Texas A&M's Aerospace Engineering Department
    * Full fuselage trainer for the Museum of Flight in Seattle
    * Nose cap assembly and crew compartment trainer for the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Ohio
    * Flight deck pilot and commander seats for NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston
    * Orbital maneuvering system engines for the U.S. Space and Rocket Center of Huntsville, Ala., National Air and Space Museum in Washington, and Evergreen Aviation & Space Museum

Personally- if one must go to KSC I'd have preferred Endeavor- for strictly selfish reasons since Endeavor/STS-69 was the only Shuttle mission I had anything to do with.

Practically- I think it would have been nice to send a second orbiter to a west coast spot (preferably closer to you, SM ).... in that, there already is a Shuttle mockup at the KSC Visitor Center- rather well-displayed with an ET/SRB stack.
What I don't get- the Delaware North park management corporation that operates the KSC VC is always 'crying poor'-- they're often severely understaffed, resulting in long wait lines at everything from getting in to begin with, getting on tour buses, even trying to check out of the gift shop with a purchase.  Yet- they say they'll spend $100 mil for a new Shuttle display.  :omg:

I bet they are expecting tourism at the KSC to really drop off after the Shuttles stop launching. Having one of the Shuttles on display will hopefully keep people visiting.

Spacecat brought up a good point, I too was wondering about the full scale shuttle mockup at the KSC VC.

The thing that surprised me most second was that Dayton did not get a shuttle.  I thought that the USAF Museum was a sure bet.  I think they have the second most impressive space collection compared to NASM and they have a very high attendance.

Jim Gerard had updated the Orbiter section of his Field Guide to American Spacecraft to reflect the new announcements.
There are a lot more trainers, models & mockups around than I remember...

As for KSC- once they get and build a new display for Atlantis, I'd guess the "Explorer" model there now will be up for grabs for other locations.  Just up the road is another model- just a shell- the "Shuttle To Tomorrow" at the Astronaut Hall of Fame.  I understand it's in pretty poor condition, but that will be going away too- either scrapped or elsewhere when the Hall of Fame shuts down and gets combined with the KSC VC.

Looks like NYC does not have the facilities to house Enterprise: http://nasawatch.com/archives/2011/11/new-yorks-decep.html
I think NYC should be disqualified and the shuttle sent to Seattle for a more deserving home.  Or for Bob's sake, in Dayton Ohio.

Just read on NASAWatch that NASA signed over Enterprise to the Intrepid Museum.
So I guess NASM will have both shuttles until the New York facility is built.
