Scablands of Washington
« on: July 22, 2008, 10:57:03 PM »
Fascinating PBS-NOVA tonight on the "maga-flood" theory of formation of the Scablands.
Any of this near you, SM?
Some amazing geology out there I really wasn't aware of.

I was born, raised and still live in the area of the results of the "Great Missoula Flood".  I was born in North Idaho where the water flowed through.  I now live in the region known as the "Palouse" where the dirt of Lake Missoula was deposited (great farmland).  The Scablands is a vast area and if I go west for about twenty minutes from my house, you can see it.  If you go west of Spokane on I-90, you can really see it.
That Nova episode is controversial around here because the guy who claimed to have discovered the Great Flood is not the true discoverer.

LOL- I had a sneaky suspicion somebody was grandstanding there, but that's pretty typical of NOVA these days.
The real credit should probably go to Bretz & Pardee way back in the 1920's.

I remember this episode aired a year ago.  I called up my dad, since geology is his hobby and told him to watch it.  He called back later and said "That the guy is full of $&!*".
