Hi Kel.

I just  submitted your site to Google.

Because of the way Google's crawler works, the more sites that you submit that are linked to your site, the higher your ranking gets.  You should try submitting all the sites that have links back to thespacerace.com.

Thanks Orstio... I didn't even know you could submit sites, I thought Google just found them on it's own. I guess I still have things to learn about how search engines work. "<img">

There are only three sites (that I am aware of) that link to my site... yours, Universe Today, and Astronomy Links. I'm certain those sites have all been crawled by Google so is there much point in me submitting them again?

Yes, especially the specific pages that link to yours.  It'll bump you up in the rankings.

Most webmasters submit their sites about once a month.  Any more than that, and you might be labelled a spammer.  It keeps track of the IP of the submission, so the more unique IPs that submit a site, the better the ranking.  If sites with a higher ranking link to you, your ranking goes up as well.

If you didn't know about submitting to Google, were you aware of DMOZ.org?  Most search engines on the web use that as a category reference.  It's essential to have your site in at least one category at DMOZ if you want people to know the site out there.

I think I knew about DMOZ before, but I didn't realize how important it is to submit sites to it. I always thought Google just went out and found sites on it's own.

Thanks for telling me about that.

Don't know if you've checked google recently, but, when I went there and typed in "the space race", you came up as the 3rd listing!!!

I guess we should get to work!!!!!!

Now at #4. I was told that you have to keep submitting to keep it up there and I think it also involves the number of posts/visitors you get.

I thought it was the opposite... that they don't like it when you submit your site more than once.

This is how Google explains their ranking system:

Quote
PageRank Explained

PageRank relies on the uniquely democratic nature of the web by using its vast link structure as an indicator of an individual page's value. In essence, Google interprets a link from page A to page B as a vote, by page A, for page B. But, Google looks at more than the sheer volume of votes, or links a page receives; it also analyzes the page that casts the vote. Votes cast by pages that are themselves "important" weigh more heavily and help to make other pages "important."

Important, high-quality sites receive a higher PageRank, which Google remembers each time it conducts a search. Of course, important pages mean nothing to you if they don't match your query. So, Google combines PageRank with sophisticated text-matching techniques to find pages that are both important and relevant to your search. Google goes far beyond the number of times a term appears on a page and examines all aspects of the page's content (and the content of the pages linking to it) to determine if it's a good match for your query.

So basically, if other sites link to yours Google considers it a vote of approval, the more sites that link to you the higher your site ranks.

We're #1 now! Woo-hoo! :D

Ok... seriously... I guess that does mean I should add more content to the site. As soon as Christmas is over, I promise! ;)

The first thing I intend to do is complete the timeline at least up until the end of the 1970's. I also want to complete more flight summaries.

You have to be careful about that.  If you submit too often, you can be labelled as a search engine spammer, and deleted from the crawl database entirely.  For most search engines, once per month is acceptable.

Thanks, LEO. 2nd or 3rd place isn't so bad. ;)

To see a listing of sites linking TO yours, just enter the following into Google (or MSN, or altavista, etc.):

link: www.thespacerace.com

Also, having sites link to yours might raise your PR ranking on Google, but doesn't necessarily increase your traffic. I would still recommend submitting your URL to as many places as possible.

You might also spend some time on the following sites for webmasters:

http://www.sitepoint.com/

http://www.webproworld.com/

They both have excellent articles, as well as forums for a variety of topics, including marketing your site and Search Engine Optimization.

There are others too, but these two are a good start, and they already provide an almost overwhelming amount of information.

For Google issues, try the Usenet Group for Google:

 :D On a different note!

The NASA Ames Research Center and Google have signed a formal agreement to collaborate on projects ranging from studying scientific-data search technology to using Google Earth flyovers for the moon and Mars.
