Hi Kel,

I was browsing through the astronaut biographies and noticed you had Alan Shepard as doing 3 EVA's. I believe there were only 2 EVA's on Apollo 14.

Later,

Bill

Hi Bill,

I wondered about that third EVA too. I also noticed that it listed two EVA's by Armstrong and Aldrin for Apollo 11, which definately seemed wrong to me.

I checked into it and found out that the third EVA by Shepard was only so he could throw excess equipment/garbage out of the LM to save weight during liftoff. Although he didn't leave the lunar module it was still considered an EVA because the LM was open to the vacuum.

I didn't realize NASA considered opening the hatch to throw out some garbage an EVA. "<img">

Here's the information from http://www.friends-partners.org/mwade/astros/shepard.htm">The Encyclopedia Astronautica:

EVA Apollo 14-1 - - 1971 Feb 5 - Assignment: EVA Crew. EVA Duration: 4.80 hours.
Explored lunar surface near LM and deployed ALSEP unmanned scientific station equipment.

EVA Apollo 14-2 - - 1971 Feb 6 - Assignment: EVA Crew. EVA Duration: 4.58 hours.
Attempted to reach rim of Cone Crater on moonwalk with ''golf cart'' for hauling equipment.

EVA Apollo 14-3 - - 1971 Feb 6 - Assignment: EVA Crew. EVA Duration: 0.03 hours.
Threw excess equipment out of LM before lift-off.

This method of tracking EVAs continues even today.  The first ISS EVA was actually an "IVA EVA" in that the crew never left the vehicle.  They had to move a part of a Russian docking mechanism from one hatch to another and had to mount it on the outside of the hatch.  Obviously the hatch had to be opened to space, so the crew was in space suits (Russian Orlan suits) and a portion of the ISS was at vacuum.

Hi evancise, welcome to the forum! I noticed in your profile that you are a NASA flight controller... that's cool! "<img">

Thanks guys.  Yup, that's correct.  I'm a Space Station Flight Controller.  Don't know who else here might be involved with NASA, but any questions I can answer - just shoot 'em my way.

The trivia questions questions and who answers
« Reply #9 on: June 14, 2006, 03:44:24 PM »
I've been following the trivia thread as much as I can just hoping there will be a question I can answer. So far I couldn't. I know liitle about Star Wars . I wasn't a fan of remakes of sci-fi films (The Thing), and I couldn't help but notice the same people seem to be either asking or answering a question.

Now from what I can figure this site has a large membership. I'm sure there are others other than myself who are just itching to ask or answer a question. So instead of having random trivia questions devoted to sci-fi why not create child boards for questions devoted to sci-fi films, books, tv, and radio (yup, there was sci-fi radio). I have a feeling a lot more people would paticipate. I know I sure would.
...Roger, and the clock is ticking.

Lemguy,
You can ask any type of sci-fi question in the sci-fi trivia thread.  We have had many discussions and quizes on books from Clarke, Heinlein, Herbert, Bradbury and Asimov.  Ask away.

Maybe we shouldn't make it a turn-based game.  Just let anyone ask a question at any time.  I've pretty much run out of questions to ask but I'd still like to try answering them.  But right now I don't like answering because I know I then have to ask the next one.  If somebody wants to ask several in a row, that's fine with me.
