Lunar Republic
« on: December 05, 2002, 07:00:02 PM »
I've dug around a bit, but I haven't located any discussion within the forums regarding the Lunar Republic (http://www.lunarrepublic.com).">www.lunarrepublic.com).

Space.com, the San Francisco Chronicle and the New York Times picked up the story that they had helped to get the name of a lunar crater removed by the IAU after they had uncovered that it had been named for a Nazi war criminal.

They have also put out the best lunar atlas that I have found so far, and have been very pro-active in supporting and financing various organizations and businesses that are involved in lunar research and development.

The Mars Society seems to get a lot more press, but I think that both of these groups are doing creditable work.

Interesting link, crazy4michelle.

One thing bothers me about it though. How do they plan to sell property on the moon when it doesn't belong to them in the first place?

How does that work? Am I allowed to just say "I claim Jupiter and all of it's moons" and then start selling it? I doubt that kind of claim is legally binding.

Any sale of property on the moon is, in my opinion, a scam.

I'm not really sure about the legal issues around this, but I think if they managed to send some kind of probe to the moon, THEN they could claim the land.

Claims such as that only hold up as long as you can physically defend and enforce them if people won't recognize your claim. But you will probably see it done anyway.

I heard a con man sold the Eiffel tower...not once...but twice. If people will pay money for it, other people will probably sell it.
