Okay, it's like this. I can remember a few moments of a sci-fi series that had a very short life when I was in my teens (I'd guess, judging from the few episodes I saw that we're talking cancelled in its first season). I think it would have been screened in the mid 90s (or late 80s, perhaps, in the USA).
It was a reasonably standard space drama, and the main picture I remember is the token alien on board. He was a "missionary," and he wore a small technologican device on his neck. He called this the "yoke," and it appeared to control violent impulses.
