Study guide for teriffic movie!
« on: September 19, 2006, 10:05:28 PM »
Okay everyone!  I am in the process of creating a study guide for my Year 8 class for Apollo 13.  For this, though, I need a few pieces of information.  I'm starting with the titles and job descriptions of Apollo controllers, but there'll be more as time goes by. . .

1) I note that there is a Guidance officer and a GNC (Guidance, Navigation and Control?) officer.  Is my understanding of the acronym correct?  If so, what is the difference in job between GuidO and GNC?

2) What does "Control" do?

3) What is INCO?

4) "Procedures" seems a little vague.  What does this officer do?

5) I know that EECOM is responsible for environmental systems, but what is the exact acronym?

Thanks in advance.  There's going to be more, so much more! :)

I read Gene Krantz' book "Failure is not an option" last month (finally) with all the descriptions.  I'll dig it up and look up the TLA's (Three Letter Anacronyms)in the back.

Speaking of which, Wikipedia claims that Gene has cameo in the movie. The commentary doesn't mention this, and you'd think either Lovell or Howard would mention him (Lovell talking about an old friend, Howard just bragging).  However, it isn't impossible.  Can someone give a definitive answer?

I know Lovell has a cameo (as the captain of the aircraft carrier at the end of the movie) but I don't recall Gene Krantz being in it.

1.  GUIDO = Guidance officer, GNC = Guidance, navigation and control officer

2.  CONTROL = Lunar module flight control officer

3.  INCO = Instrumentation and communications officer

4.  ?

5.  EECOM = Electrical and environmental command officer
