Roving Mars
« on: January 19, 2006, 11:24:20 AM »
I read on Space.com that an IMAX movie based on the Mars Rovers will open on January 27.  I hope they don't dumb it down like "Magnificent Desolation".

I was just looking at some fo the photos Viking took a few decades back, and one thing struck me.

Mars is ugly. Really ugly.

That's nothing compared to Venus though, if the Venera photos are representative.

Not only is Venus ugly, it smells bad too. At least, until your nose melts and your body is turned into a fleshy pancake.

I wonder when it will get to an IMAX near me? I might be able to sit in a dark theater ,full of strangers, to watch it.

I think Mars and Venus are fascinating, wouldn't really describe volcanic terrain as ugly.

I think any planet looks cool when you're seeing it for the first time... magnificent desolation... ;)

Exactly.  I wouldn't call Antarctica or the Hawaiian volcanic flows ugly either.

Klendathu is from Starship Troopers (right?) but what is LV 427 from?

Starship Troopers was a terrible movie. It completly misrepresented Hinlein's society that he promoted.

I also read the book and it emphasied most is the duty of a citizen to protect the body politic.  We also got to see how the main character worked hard to go to officer school to become an officer and truly understand how to become a citizen.
Many of my friends have served in the military and they have told me that they value our country more because of it.  Kind of justifing Heinlein's idea.
I have always been in favor of mandatory service for high school graduates.  I almost went into the army reserves because I needed money for college but I managed to get a scholarship.  I saw a lot of people in college who had no direction and/or discipline.  The army would of straighten them out.

The movie was not that bad, plus there was no shower scene in the book!
