BARIS on MacOS X
« on: October 03, 2005, 06:13:28 AM »
Hi, this is my first post here.
I'm trying to use the cd version of BARIS (the ISO image) on my mac through virtual pc 7 (i've installed win95 on it).
The game freezes right at the beginning, as the blue welcome screen shows up. I also tryied burning the ISO on a cd-rw, but nothing changed.
Any hint?

Is it possible to run a DOS emulator instead of a windows emulator under MAC OS? If so, try that

Yeah, that's what I'd recommend.  There is a version of DOSBox for Mac OS X: http://dosbox.sourceforge.net/download.php?main=1&begaming_website_session=8ffb99ba007a5e0f6aef184564af3d1c .  That might work for you.  They even have a GUI for it, like D-Fend 2 for Whinedows.

Thanks! I didn't know of a MacOS X version of DOSBox. I will try that + Radnor. I'll let you know what happens. Wish me luck.

It works. It's slow and there are probleblems with the mission movies, but it works.
Radnor seems to have some problem if you download the official release (it does not start). I downloaded a non official version from here: http://www.mac-emu.net/files/Radnor-dosbox063.zip (DOSBox 0.63 is already embedded).

Non american users must select the USA keyboard in osX BEFORE launching Radnor (it took me two hours to figure out this! I wasn't able to type ":", so i could not install BARIS from the cdrom).

Any tips on improving the emulation speed?

You can adjust the number of CPU cycles, and the size of DOS RAM allocated to the program.  I've also heard you can get a big performance boost by changing the processor type.

I played a bit with the CPU cycles, and it's working much better now.

How can I do that?

I don't know exactly how to do it in the command-line interface, or in the Mac OS X GUI.  But what's supposed to make a difference is changing the CPU Core from "normal" to "dynamic".

I will try to find documentation on the net.
